Dating to the 1970s, the present exceptional coin watch by Piaget is a remarkable expression of the Maison’s mastery of ultra-thin watchmaking and jewellery arts. Conceived to conceal a timepiece beneath a seemingly ordinary precious-metal coin, coin watches represented one of Piaget’s most sophisticated and discreet creations, transforming a functional object into a jewel. Crafted in 18K pink gold, the watch is housed within a circular case concealed beneath a hinged, finely textured cover. Upon opening, a minimalist pink-coloured dial is revealed, complemented by elegant blue hands. The case is fitted with an integrated pink-gold bracelet featuring an intricate woven geometric pattern, characteristic of Piaget’s highly refined jewellery watchmaking of the period. The reverse is of exceptional significance, featuring a finely hand-engraved depiction of the Saudi Arabian national emblem, comprising a palm tree above two crossed swords. This highly personal decoration strongly suggests that the present watch was specially made as a presentation piece for King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, King of Saudi Arabia from 1964 until 1975. King Faisal was one of the most influential figures in the modern history of Saudi Arabia. A prominent statesman and diplomat, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1930 and played a central role in shaping the Kingdom’s international relations before and during his reign. The combination of its unusual coin-watch construction, exceptional pink-gold execution, integrated bracelet and hand-engraved Saudi emblem makes the present watch an extraordinarily rare creation. To the best of our knowledge, no other Piaget coin watch bearing such a direct reference to King Faisal has been publicly documented, suggesting that the present example may be a unique creation specially commissioned for the Saudi sovereign.
