As early as the 1920's, Cartier take inspiration from far eastern aesthetics, a theme that would regularly in the house's creations during this period, from mystery clocks to its most exquisite high jewelry pieces. It was in this spirit that bamboo model was created in the 1970s, a cushion shaped case with soft lines, featuring contours that evoke a bamboo stalk, available in both men's and women's sizes. Later, in the 1990s, Cartier revived this signature style entirely new, the case, now tonneau shaped, accentuated and amplified the bamboo motif, straddling the line between watchmaking and jewelry. Produced over a relatively short preriod, in extremely limited quantities, this Tonneau Bamboo variant never achieved, at the time, the commercial success its design deserved with the benefit of hindsight, this now makes it one of the rarest Cartier pieces from that era and one of the most sought after discerning collectors. The dial, in the purest tradition of the house, features ivory color and black Roman numerals, and blued steel sword shaped hands, the secret Cartier signature is discreetly cancealed there, while the word "Paris" rather than "Swiss" is displayed, reflecting the house legitimate pride in its entirely Parisian manufaturing at the time.
