The reference 16018 was introduced in 1977 and remained in production until 1988, representing one of the most recognisable iterations of the classic Datejust. It is distinguished by the new calibre 3035, featuring Rolex’s quick-set date mechanism, and by its 18K yellow gold construction with the characteristic fluted bezel. The present example, dating from 1988, is therefore among the final examples of the reference and is particularly distinguished by its striking black onyx dial. Rolex is renowned for its experimentation with natural hardstone dials, creating some of the most distinctive and sought-after variations of its classic models. With its remarkably homogeneous black colour and sophisticated appearance, onyx has always held a particular fascination among collectors. The present dial is further enhanced by Arabic numerals at 6 and 9 o’clock, each set with a diamond, providing a refined contrast against the deep black surface of the stone.
