Introduced in the late 1950s, the Milgauss was developed by Rolex for scientists working in environments exposed to strong magnetic fields. Its name, derived from “mille” and “Gauss”, refers to its resistance to magnetic fields of up to 1,000 Gauss, achieved through a dedicated movement protection system. In the early 1960s, Rolex introduced Reference 1019. More restrained than its predecessors, it dispensed with the graduated rotating bezel and lightning-bolt seconds hand, adopting a smooth bezel and a distinctly understated aesthetic. Produced exclusively in stainless steel for nearly three decades, it remains one of the most discreet models within the Rolex Oyster collection. The present example is distinguished by its light grey dial, known among collectors as the “CERN dial”. Its defining feature is the absence of luminous material, with neither the hands nor hour markers containing tritium. Such examples are particularly rare, with only a few hundred believed to have been produced through the 1970s. The red “Milgauss” signature and red-tipped central seconds hand provide subtle accents of colour. Combining robust technical construction with an understated design and a history closely associated with the scientific world, the Milgauss 1019 represents one of the most distinctive expressions of Rolex professional watchmaking of the 20th century.
