When Rolex introduced its Perpetual rotor calibre in 1931, the company transformed the history of the wristwatch. For the first time, an automatic movement was housed in a water-resistant Oyster case — an invention patented as early as 1926, whose screw-down bezel and caseback system had already established the reputation of the brand bearing the crown emblem.
From these two innovations emerged the Oyster Perpetual and, with it, the generously curved silhouette of the caseback required to accommodate the rotor, which would earn these calibres their affectionate “Bubbleback” nickname among enthusiasts. Reference 2940, presented here, elegantly embodies the spirit of the brand. Its stainless-steel case, featuring clean-lined inner lugs, no crown guards and a smooth bezel, houses a self-winding Perpetual movement beneath a domed, screw-down caseback, ensuring the water resistance characteristic of the Oyster case. The dial, crown and caseback are signed, in keeping with Rolex’s consistent practice at the time. A particularly elegant vintage Rolex, combining the legendary durability of the Oyster with a refined design imbued with character.
