Introduced in the late 1970s, the Rolex Day-Date reference 18108 represents one of the most distinctive interpretations of the prestigious “President” wristwatch. Crafted entirely in 18K yellow gold, the present example is particularly appealing for its richly textured execution, combining the characteristic bark finish with an elegant gem-set treatment. The bezel features a finely engraved bark-like surface, enhanced by discreet brilliant-cut diamonds positioned at regular intervals, creating a refined contrast between the textured gold and the scintillation of the stones. The same distinctive bark finish continues onto the central links of the President bracelet, whose alternating polished and textured surfaces emphasize the sculptural character of the watch. Particularly captivating is the natural birch burlwood dial, distinguished by its warm honey-brown colour and extraordinary organic figuring, with swirling patterns and darker areas unique to the individual piece. The natural variation of the wood makes each such dial inherently one of a kind, while the applied yellow gold baton indexes and matching hands provide an elegant contrast. The iconic day and date apertures at 12 and 3 o’clock respectively, together with the Cyclops magnifier, remain hallmarks of the Day-Date’s instantly recognizable design. Powered by Rolex’s self-winding calibre 3055, the reference 18108 benefits from the quickset date mechanism characteristic of this generation. Combining precious materials, unusual decorative techniques and an exceptionally attractive natural wood dial, the present Day-Date represents a highly distinctive expression of Rolex’s creativity during the late 1970s and 1980s.
