Among the earliest and most significant complicated wristwatches produced by Audemars Piguet, the present timepiece is an exceptional discovery, combining a complete calendar with moon phases in an extraordinarily rare platinum case. Dating from 1927, it belongs to the pioneering generation of complicated wristwatches developed by the Manufacture during the 1920s, when wristwatch complications were still in their infancy. Audemars Piguet launched its first triple calendar moon-phase wristwatch in 1924, now preserved in the Audemars Piguet Heritage Collection under inventory no. 1768. This historic creation marked the beginning of the Manufacture’s production of wristwatches with complete calendar and moon-phase indications, a configuration subsequently produced in remarkably limited numbers. According to the research published in Audemars Piguet 20th Century Complicated Wristwatches, approximately 48 examples sharing this configuration were produced between 1924 and 1954, of which only a very small number are known today. The present watch is particularly remarkable as it is the only known example of this early complete calendar and moon-phase configuration to be cased in platinum. Its manually wound calibre 10GHSM displays the date, day, month, moon phases and subsidiary seconds, while the refined silvered dial, with applied Breguet numerals and railway minute track, further enhances its understated elegance. Of particular interest is the inscription “Importé de Suisse” at 6 o’clock. According to the Audemars Piguet Archives, the watch was sold in France by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1927, accounting for both the inscription and the French import hallmarks. The choice of platinum is of exceptional importance for Audemars Piguet. Far rarer than gold within the Manufacture’s early production, its use for such a highly complicated wristwatch makes the present example truly singular. Combining historical importance, extreme rarity and an exceptional precious-metal case, this platinum timepiece represents a remarkable chapter in the early history of Audemars Piguet’s complicated wristwatches.
