Produced between approximately 1938 and 1944, the Rolex reference 3548 belongs to the exceptionally rare family of Oyster Perpetual watches known among collectors as the “Empire”. A remarkable departure from the more familiar Oyster designs of the period, the model is characterized by its perfectly round case and distinctive elongated, rectangular and sloping lugs, creating one of the most elegant and unusual profiles among early Rolex automatic watches. The present example is particularly distinguished by its exceptionally well-preserved pink gold case, retaining strong proportions and crisp architectural lines. Its highly attractive pink dial has developed a beautiful and warm patina over time, further enhanced by its striking Roman numeral configuration. The dial also displays fascinating ghost-like shadows corresponding to the historic position of the hands, most likely the result of the watch having remained untouched and stationary for an extended period of time, creating an evocative record of its long-term preservation.
