The present Cartier wristwatch is a remarkable example of the Maison’s early Art Deco creations and is known among collectors by the evocative nickname “Nain Jaune”. The name is derived from the traditional French board game Le Nain Jaune and refers specifically to the distinctive shape of the case, which recalls the stylised table featured in the game. Exceptionally, the case is crafted in platinum and is lavishly set with diamonds. Its unusual angular architecture is further enhanced by contrasting black onyx inserts, creating a striking interplay between the brilliance of the diamonds, the deep lustre of the onyx and the cool sheen of platinum. The elegant white dial features bold black Roman numerals, a railway minute track and Cartier’s characteristic blued-steel hands. The diamond-set surround extends into pronounced geometric projections, giving the watch its unmistakable silhouette and explaining the enduring “Nain Jaune” designation. The model represents one of Cartier’s most playful and unconventional interpretations of the Art Deco wristwatch, transforming a functional timepiece into an object of jewellery and design.
