The present watch is a superb example of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 6265, one of the most iconic manually wound chronograph references produced by Rolex. Introduced in 1971 alongside the reference 6263, the 6265 succeeded the reference 6262 and represented the return of screw-down chronograph pushers, previously seen only on the short-lived reference 6240. These provided the watch with improved water resistance and became one of the defining features of the Oyster Daytona. While the reference 6263 was fitted with a black acrylic tachymeter bezel, the reference 6265 was distinguished by its engraved metal bezel. Produced in stainless steel as well as yellow gold in two different standards, the present example is crafted in 18K yellow gold. Dating from the period when, from the mid-1970s onwards, gold Daytonas received chronometer certification, its champagne dial proudly bears the “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” designation, a feature found on precious-metal examples from this period onwards. With its highly attractive champagne dial and contrasting black subsidiary registers, the present reference 6265 is further distinguished by its truly exceptional state of preservation. Both the case and dial have been remarkably well preserved, retaining strong definition and an outstanding overall appearance, making this a truly exceptional example.
