Introduced in 1956 the Rolex Day-Date immediately established itself as the undisputed flagship of the company’s collection. It remains the only Rolex model to display both the day of the week in full and the date simultaneously in its distinctive apertures. In the early 1980s, Rolex took the exclusivity of its flagship model even further by offering, off catalogue and to selected clients, dials set in a configuration that has since become legendary among collectors. Known as “Pleiades,” these dials perfectly evoke the visual effect they create: a scattering of round diamonds set directly into the dial, enhanced by princess-cut diamond hour markers framed within small square gold motifs, recalling a starry sky rendered in precious metal. Rolex produced these dials only in very small quantities, making them one of the holy grails of the Day-Date collection for discerning connoisseurs. The reference 18048 presented here combines two refinements rarely found together in this configuration, a black "Pleiades" dial set with round diamonds and princess-cut diamond hour markers, which stand out magnificently against the dark background, and a bezel set with factory diamonds. This latter feature is rarely found on models fitted with a "Pleiades" dial and further enhances the watch rarity and exclusivity. The yellow gold Oyster case houses the automatic chronometer caliber 3055 and is paired with the yellow gold President, one of the model's signature features.
