Introduced in 1958, the reference 3418 is one of Patek Philippe’s most fascinating stainless steel time-only of the period. Produced for only four years, it was conceived as an anti-magnetic “tool” watch and distinguished by its ingenious patented four-piece case construction. By removing the outer ring securing the case back, concealed lugs were revealed, allowing the watch to be worn either on a leather strap or its integrated stainless steel bracelet, giving rise to the collector’s enduring nickname “Convertible”. The 35mm cases were manufactured by Jean Vallon in Neuchâtel, while the distinctive mesh bracelets were supplied by Cornu & Cie of La Chaux-de-Fonds. The present example is particularly rare for its original black dial with elongated radiating indexes incised on the dial and subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock, a configuration only very rarely encountered. To the best of our knowledge, it is the only publicly documented black-dial example accompanied by both its original Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin and Extract from the Archives. The latter confirms manufacture in 1958 and sale on 10 July 1959, while the original Certificate of Origin further documents the black dial configuration. Powered by the manual-winding calibre 12-400, the present watch represents an exceptionally rare and remarkably well-documented example of Patek Philippe’s Calatrava “Convertible”.
