Presented by Rolex at the 1950 Basel Fair, the reference 6062 occupies a singular place in the history of the Crown. Produced for only approximately three years, it is one of just two historic Rolex references to combine a triple calendar with moon phases, the other being the legendary reference 8171. Conceived at a time when Rolex was still seeking to establish itself among the great traditional Swiss manufactures, the 6062 represents a fascinating chapter in the brand’s history, when its ambitions extended beyond the robust and increasingly mass-produced wristwatches that would later become synonymous with Rolex, such as the Submariner and GMT-Master. In this period, the firm was instead attempting to compete with the smaller, highly specialised productions of Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. The present stainless steel example is particularly distinguished by its exceptional state of preservation and highly desirable configuration. Its two-tone “Explorer” dial features applied yellow gold numerals and luminous baton indexes, complemented by matching luminous hands. Of particular note are the clearly and remarkably legible case-back engravings, a detail rarely encountered on examples of this age and testament to the watch’s careful preservation throughout its life. Its provenance further enhances its appeal. In 1955, the watch was acquired by its first owner, a student born in Hong Kong, as a personal gift to celebrate his graduation from Imperial College London. Remarkably, it remained with him for more than six decades, making its first appearance at auction only in 2017, in Hong Kong. It was subsequently acquired by renowned Italian collector John Goldberger, who cherished the watch for approximately ten years. Combining rarity, condition, configuration and an extraordinary history of ownership, the present reference 6062 offers a remarkable opportunity to acquire not simply one of Rolex’s most important vintage watches, but a genuine piece of twentieth-century horological and collecting history.
