This remarkable Cartier wristwatch is distinguished by its unusual “Deck Chair” construction, referring to the articulated mechanism incorporated into the case and strap assembly. Unlike a conventional wristwatch, the case is designed to tilt and pivot laterally, allowing the watch to be opened from the side and facilitating its placement on the wrist. The ingenious construction was conceived to be used with a fully closed strap, with the articulated gold case providing the necessary opening mechanism for the watch to be put on and removed. When opened, the case assumes a characteristic tilted or “deck chair” position, giving the watch its highly distinctive appearance. The mechanism is purely related to the wearing and opening of the watch and does not provide access to the movement. The rectangular case is executed in 18K yellow gold and houses a white dial signed Cartier Paris, with elongated black Roman numerals and blued steel hands. The case and articulated components bear French hallmarks, including the eagle's head hallmark denoting 18-karat gold, confirming its manufacture in France. The present watch is a unique piece, numbered 032814 and engraved N° UN to the case back, making it an especially unusual example of Cartier's experimental and highly individual case designs of the 1970s.
