The present watch is a remarkable expression of Cartier’s creative experimentation during the 1960s, a period in which the maison explored unconventional shapes, materials and decorative techniques, reinterpreting some of its most iconic designs through highly individual creations. The Tank, with its unmistakable geometric architecture, became an ideal canvas for such experimentation, as exemplified by the present unique piece. The square-shaped yellow gold case is framed by an exceptionally striking enamel bezel, decorated with alternating Arabic numerals and circular gold accents on a warm golden-brown ground. The elaborate bezel gives the watch an almost jewellery-like character, while preserving the strong architectural aesthetic of the Tank. The white dial is signed Cartier and features bold black Roman numerals, elegant blued steel hands and a finely decorated inner rectangular frame. Manufactured in France in the 1960s, the watch bears the French eagle’s head hallmark for 18k gold. The case back is signed Cartier and engraved N° UN, together with the serial number 033655, identifying the present watch as a unique piece. The watch is powered by a Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 838, the movement itself signed Cartier. An exceptionally individual interpretation of the Tank, the present watch embodies Cartier’s spirit of experimentation, combining its iconic geometric design with an unusual enamel decoration and a highly distinctive colour palette.
