Before becoming, from the 1950s and 1960s onwards, one of the foremost names in sports wristwatches, Rolex built its early reputation through pocket watches and precision timekeeping. As early as the 1910s, the Maison founded by Hans Wilsdorf achieved notable timing records at Swiss and British observatories, making the designation “Extra Precision”, as well as variants such as “Extra Prima”, a powerful commercial asset. The present chronograph pocket watch should be considered within this context, as a rare testimony to an era when Rolex was still competing with the great traditional manufactures in the field of classical pocket watches, before progressively turning towards wristwatches and the sporting world that would establish its worldwide reputation. The watch features a black lacquered dial with gilt hour markers, numerals and hands, arranged in a classic two-register configuration. The subsidiary dial at 12 o’clock records elapsed minutes over a 30-minute scale, while the register at 6 o’clock indicates running seconds. The chronograph is operated by a single pusher integrated into the winding crown. A gilt tachymetric scale, calibrated on a “base 1000”, surrounds the dial and allows average speeds to be calculated over a distance of one kilometre. The “Rolex Genève” signature, together with the “Extra Precision” designation at the centre of the dial, underlines the high degree of regulation to which the Maison subjected these timepieces for a particularly discerning clientele.
