Following the acquisition of Blancpain in 1981 for the symbolic sum of CHF 21,500, Jean-Claude Biver, together with his partner Jacques Piguet, successfully revitalized the brand by focusing on high-end mechanical watchmaking and traditional craftsmanship. This vision led to the creation of the celebrated "Six Masterpieces", a collection of highly complicated wristwatches that played a pivotal role in the rebirth of mechanical watchmaking following the quartz crisis. Introduced in 1989, the present Split-Seconds Chronograph reference 1186 stands among the most technically significant models of the series. Powered by the self-winding calibre 1186, it is widely regarded as the world's first automatic split-seconds chronograph movement. The present example is further distinguished by its platinum case and belongs to the exclusive Platinum Masterpiece Collection, produced in a limited edition of only 99 pieces, making it one of the rarest and most desirable executions of the reference. The present watch is further distinguished by its provenance from the collection of Johnny Dorelli, the celebrated Italian singer, actor and television personality.
