Founded in Geneva in 1839, Patek Philippe has established itself over the decades as one of the most respected names in Swiss fine watchmaking. In 1932, the Calatrava was introduced, featuring a sleek, round case with understated lines that would become one of the brand’s classics and serve as the aesthetic foundation for numerous dress watches produced in the decades that followed. The present timepiece is a direct descendant of this lineage. It is distinguished by its particularly striking “teardrop lugs”, which are highly sought after by collectors and lend the case a fluid elegance. Although most often crafted in gold, the present example features a stainless-steel case with 18K pink-gold lugs, an unusual combination that further enhances its distinctive character. The black lacquered dial provides a striking contrast to the applied gold Roman numerals and hour markers. This type of design was highly prized for dress watches of the period. The watch is fitted with a two-tone stainless-steel and 18K rose-gold link bracelet signed Gay Frères, an uncommon feature for a classic timepiece dating from the early 1940s.
