The present lot, also known as “Ovettone”, since it was (and still is nowadays) one of the largest bubble-back types, time-only watch produced by the brand, has been realized in white gold with screw-down case. The Rolex reference 6084 is a transitional piece from the “Bubblebacks” that preceded the Datejust and Day-Dates that came to follow. The production of this reference in white gold is extremely rare, until now we have only seen this one past in auction many years ago. Being an everyday watch usually made in stainless steel, the presence of this material makes it one of a kind, an extremely rare collector’s item. In over 70 years has been preserved extremely well: the lugs are sharp, the bezel is smooth and the case back is clean and shiny in an extraordinary way. The silver dial is simply beautiful, launched by Rolex as prototypes for the future Explorer line, these early versions feature 3 6 9 numbers indexes, outer closed track for the constant seconds and steel luminous hands. Moreover the dagger-shaped hour markers and Rolex coronet are not applied, but instead they are embossed and sunk beneath its surface, giving the dial fascinating depth. A unique piece, passed only many years ago at an auction, only this lot is known produced in white gold, a specimen ready to be placed in one of the most important collections in the world. This watch is passed by the Phillips auction house in May 2016.
