Founded in 1865 in Le Locle, Zenith established itself as a benchmark for precision watchmaking, with a longstanding commitment to producing reliable and highly precise timepieces. The present Compur, dating from the 1940s, is a fine example of the Manufacture’s chronographs of the period. Its round stainless-steel case is fitted with two rectangular pump-style pushers, while the elegant silvered dial features a refined bi-compax configuration, complemented by both tachymeter and graduated telemeter scales marked “1 Km”. These practical indications reflect the functional purpose of chronographs of the era, used to calculate speed and estimate distance. The manually wound movement embodies the robustness and reliability sought by Zenith for its everyday timepieces. Remarkably well preserved, the present Compur is representative of an important period in Zenith’s history, preceding the technical developments that would ultimately culminate in the introduction of the El Primero in 1969. A distinctive and unusual example of mid-century Swiss chronograph design.
