During the 1930s and 1940s, Eberhard & Co. established itself as one of Switzerland’s leading specialists in chronographs, developing distinctive designs and innovative timing mechanisms. The present lot brings together two examples from this important period, both dating to circa 1940 and united by their unusual salmon-coloured dials. The first is a Pre-Extra-Fort wrist chronograph in stainless steel, featuring a large case with stepped bezel and fixed lugs. Its salmon dial is fitted with three subsidiary counters, baton hour markers with a Roman numeral XII at 12, and a combination of telemeter and distinctive snail-shaped tachymeter scales. The blue-steel hands and naturally aged dial further enhance its strong vintage character. The Pre-Extra-Fort designation is a collector’s term used for Eberhard chronographs produced before the later models bearing the “Extra-Fort” name on the dial. The second is a stainless-steel pocket chronograph, also dating to circa 1940, with a salmon dial, large Arabic numerals and two subsidiary counters positioned at 12 and 6 o’clock. Its dial features several concentric timing scales, including telemeter and tachymeter indications, together with the characteristic “BASE 60 1000 M” scale. Together, these two timepieces offer a fascinating comparison between Eberhard’s wrist and pocket chronographs of the period, while their rare salmon dials and attractive natural ageing give the pair a particularly distinctive presence.
