Created in 1904 by Louis Cartier for the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Santos ranks among the foundational models in the history of the modern wristwatch. In 1978, Cartier evolved its historic model with the introduction of the Santos Galbée. Curved lugs, an integrated metal bracelet and an automatic movement brought a contemporary dimension to the original silhouette, while preserving the distinctive visual identity that had made the model so renowned. It is within this lineage that the present example belongs, crafted entirely in 18K yellow gold. The watch is distinguished by its silvered dial, where the traditional hour markers have been replaced by twelve brilliant-cut diamonds, discreetly set directly into the dial. This subtle enhancement lends the composition a precious touch of brilliance, while preserving both excellent legibility and the understated elegance characteristic of the Maison. The winding crown is likewise set with a diamond, while the screws securing the first links of the bracelet are also diamond-set, extending the jewellery character of the watch with remarkable stylistic coherence. The gilt sword-shaped hands and signature “Cartier” complete a composition of refined discretion. The present Santos offers a particularly harmonious expression of Cartier’s distinctive aesthetic, bringing together architectural rigour, horological functionality and jewellery elegance within a timepiece whose instantly recognisable design has remained remarkably enduring.
