The Rolex Day-Date, introduced in 1956, quickly became the flagship of the Rolex collection and one of the most recognizable symbols of prestige in modern watchmaking. In 1977, Rolex introduced the new generation of five-digit Day-Date references, including the present reference 18078, marking an important evolution in the model’s history. These references were equipped with the new automatic calibre 3055, introducing the convenient quick-set date mechanism, while also adopting the new sapphire crystal. Crafted in 18K yellow gold, the reference 18078 is distinguished by its characteristic bark finish, applied to both the bezel and the central links of the President bracelet. The bezel of this particular example is further enhanced with diamonds, adding an exceptional touch of luxury. Furthermore, the watch is fitted with a rare and particularly attractive ammonite dial in an Explorer-style configuration, featuring Arabic numerals at 6 and 9 o’clock, each incorporating a diamond. The naturally occurring pattern of the ammonite creates a unique interplay of dark grey and black tones, beautifully contrasting with the warm yellow gold.
