The present Patek Philippe pocket watch is a particularly charming example of the Maison’s early production, distinguished by its unusual two-tone case in platinum and pink gold and, most notably, by its retailer-signed dial. The dial bears the signature “YARD. PATEK, PHILIPPE & Cie GENÈVE”, identifying Raymond C. Yard, the celebrated New York jeweller whose eponymous firm became renowned for sophisticated Art Deco jewellery and exceptional use of platinum. His signature establishes a direct connection between this Patek Philippe timepiece and one of America’s most distinguished jewellers of the early 20th century. The case combines a broad platinum bezel with a warm pink-gold case band, pendant and bow, creating an elegant and decidedly modern appearance for its period. The silvered dial features applied pink-gold baton numerals, interspersed with prominent black Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock, a finely graduated outer minute track and matching pink-gold hands. Retailer-signed Patek Philippe watches are particularly sought after by collectors, providing an important link between the Geneva manufacture and the distinguished international retailers through whom its watches were distributed. In the present example, the combination of Patek Philippe, Raymond C. Yard, platinum and pink gold results in a particularly rare and compelling expression of early 20th-century horological and jewellery craftsmanship.
