Introduced in 1988, the reference 16520 holds a particularly important place in the history of the Rolex Daytona as the first automatic generation of the iconic chronograph, powered by Rolex’s modified version of the legendary Zenith El Primero calibre 4030. The reference would remain in production for over a decade and represents a defining chapter in the evolution of the Daytona. The present example is particularly remarkable for its exceptionally rare salmon-coloured dial with applied Arabic numerals. Only three stainless steel examples in this exact configuration are known to have appeared at auction, making the present watch an extraordinarily elusive variation of the reference 16520. The origins of these unusual dials remain uncertain, with the most plausible theories suggesting either a special order for an important client or an experimental prototype produced for Rolex. The combination of its rarity and highly distinctive aesthetic makes this Daytona a particularly compelling example for the discerning collector.
