The Baignoire, French for “bathtub”, takes its name from the softly elongated oval form of the case, whose silhouette recalls the shape of a classical baignoire. The design traces its origins to early oval Cartier wristwatches of the 1910s, later formalized and named “Baignoire” in the mid 20th century as part of Cartier’s exploration of fluid, feminine case geometries. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, the model had become one of the maison’s most refined dress watch expressions, particularly in pieces produced by the London workshop in limited quantities. The present watch illustrates the close collaboration between Cartier London and Paris during this period. The exterior of the yellow gold case bears London hallmarks on the case flank, while outside of the caseback is stamped with 2 tiny owls, the French import marks for 18 karats gold. This dual hallmarking is repeated on the clasp, which is engraved with the same case number, 1034, and further struck with both British and French assay marks, an appealing detail that underscores the transnational production and distribution typical of Cartier’s European ateliers at the time. Inside, the caseback carries the classic London hallmarks for gold production, together with the “JC” maker’s mark for Jacques Cartier. The date letter “q” corresponds to approximately 1971, situating the watch within a particularly collectible period of London-made Cartier output. Combining the graceful oval proportions of the Baignoire with rare dual-country and very crispy hallmarking and matching numbered clasp, this fresh to the market example stands as a refined and historically coherent representation of Cartier’s Anglo-Parisian production in the early 1970s.
