Introduced in 1985, the Patek Philippe Ref. 3940 marked the Manufacture’s return to the production of an automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch. Its remarkably slim profile was made possible in part by its ultra-thin self-winding movement with peripheral micro-rotor. The reference was produced in three series, with the First Series being the rarest and most sought-after, distinguished by its deeply recessed, or “sunken”, subsidiary dials and solid case back, unlike the contemporary Ref. 3941 with sapphire-crystal display back. From the Second Series onwards, both case-back options were offered. The Ref. 3940 was introduced in conjunction with the 225th anniversary of Beyer Chronometrie, for which Patek Philippe produced only 25 specially signed and numbered examples with golden dials. The present watch is not one of these anniversary pieces, but belongs to the regular First Series production, of which approximately 100 yellow-gold examples are believed to have been made. Its Beyer signature nonetheless makes it an exceedingly unusual and arguably even rarer configuration, adding exceptional interest for the connoisseur.
