The Rolex Day-Date, introduced in 1956, quickly established itself as the flagship of the Rolex collection and one of the most recognizable symbols of prestige in modern watchmaking. In 1977, Rolex introduced the new generation of five-digit Day-Date references, including the present reference 18078, marking an important evolution in the model’s history. These references were equipped with the automatic calibre 3055, introducing the convenient quick-set date mechanism and a sapphire crystal. Crafted in 18K yellow gold, the reference 18078 is distinguished by its characteristic bark finish, applied to the bezel and the central links of the President bracelet. The present example is fitted with a rare and exceptionally attractive natural rubellite dial, displaying rich burgundy-red tones and a unique organic pattern. The dial is further enhanced by ten diamond-set hour markers, each framed within a yellow-gold setting, creating a striking contrast with the deep colour of the rubellite and the textured yellow-gold case.
