The name “Gondolo” derives from the “Chronometro Gondolo” watches that Patek Philippe produced in the early 20th century for the Brazilian retailer Gondolo & Labouriau. Launched in platinum in 2007 as reference 5098P, and released in rose gold the following year as reference 5098R, the Chronometro Gondolo revived a name that had lain dormant in the Patek Philippe catalogue for some eighty years. The model draws direct inspiration from a tonneau-shaped Chronometro Gondolo watch dating from 1925, faithfully reproducing its distinctive silhouette while curving it to conform to the contours of the wrist. This presented a considerable technical challenge, as the curvature had to be reproduced identically in both the sapphire crystal and the transparent case back. Its hand-wound mechanical movement, Patek Philippe calibre 25-21 REC, incorporates the aesthetic hallmarks of the historic Chronometro Gondolo calibres, together with a Gyromax balance wheel. Produced until the mid-2010s before being discontinued from the current catalogue, the reference 5098R remains highly sought after on the secondary market for its distinctive Art Deco aesthetic, the quality of its hand-executed guilloché decoration, and its direct connection to the Geneva-based Manufacture’s long history of producing shaped watches.
