Launched in 1998, the 3710/1A marked a turning point in the history of the Nautilus. It reintroduced the 42 mm “Jumbo” format, which had been absent from the catalogue since the discontinuation of reference 3700 in 1990, and became the first Nautilus to feature a complication beyond the display of the time and date. Produced exclusively in stainless steel, it abandoned the horizontal embossing characteristic of earlier Nautilus dials in favour of a solid black lacquered finish, with applied white-gold Roman numerals and luminous hands. At 12 o’clock, the power-reserve indicator became the model’s visual signature — an absolute first for a Nautilus — complemented by a date aperture at 3 o’clock. The in-house automatic calibre 330 SC IZR also drives a central seconds hand. Produced exclusively in stainless steel until 2006, the year of the Nautilus’s 30th anniversary, which was marked by the launch of an entirely new generation of models, including references 5711 and 5712, the 3710 enjoyed a relatively short production run of approximately eight years. This limited production period, combined with its status as a pioneer of Nautilus complications and its direct lineage to Gérald Genta’s original design, makes it one of the most sought-after references among collectors of historic Nautilus timepieces today.
