Introduced in 1987, the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar reference 25654 succeeded the landmark 25554, retaining its iconic 39 mm proportions while adopting a redesigned case that improved water resistance. Case thickness increased from 7.5 mm to 8.3 mm, enhancing robustness without compromising the elegance of the ultra-thin self-winding calibre 2120/2800. Produced until 1998, it became the cornerstone of Audemars Piguet's perpetual calendar collection, with 851 examples made across all metals. Of these, only 315 were cased in stainless steel, making this configuration rarer than the 430 examples produced in yellow gold. Offered with both Petite Tapisserie and smooth dials, the present watch features the latter, whose uninterrupted grey surface creates a cleaner, more understated aesthetic. Further enhancing its desirability, this early example bears a low case number and retains the smaller Audemars Piguet signature on the dial, a feature exclusive to the earliest production pieces before the logo was enlarged.
